In 2013, the University of Virginia was contemplating converting the existing roof above the second floor of its hospital to a green roof. Grey Fox Consulting worked with Roofmeadow (a green roof consultant located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) to evaluate the steel framing structure of the existing roof for the additional load imposed by the green roof medium. Our investigation resulted in qualifying the roof for an additional 30 pounds per square foot reserved capacity, which resulted in a beautiful roof visible from the patients’ rooms in the eight-story tower adjacent to this roof.
